Making a music video

Wednesday, April 27th, 2005

1. Sunday was spent making a music video for My best friend. I have a feeling it will be excellent. Just because I once took lessons (this was like ten years ago) I have always been a firm believer of my own acting abilities. The video plot is simple, yet effective:

Scene 1. Hello Saferide grabs milk from the fridge.
Scene 2. Hello Saferide drinks coffee AND eats cornflakes.
Scene 3. Hello Saferide sings in a sofa.

Oh, how I grabbed that milk with style and elegance! And those cornflakes, man, you could never tell I don’t like those flat, creepy cereal things! I felt like Lena Endre. Peder Bergstrand and the other guys who made the video applauded generously, obviously realising there was a star in the rise in the studio.

2. I feel that perhaps I should answer a few questions concerning My best friend. It’s quite a simple song that started out as a celebration for my best friend Erika when we were like 19 and lived together. I remember falling for one bizarre guy after another and sometimes sighing and wondering why the hell I couldn’t fall in love with my best friend instead who already possessed all the qualities I looked for in another person.

(I realised it was a hit song when I sang it for two male exchange students from Kazakstan and they immediately sang along. You have never lived until you have seen clean-cut Kazahstanians gently humming: “Damn, I wish I was a lesbian”.)
Later, when I finished it, I used my artistic freedom (hah!) to change the story, so now it’s not really about Erika and me but rather about two random teenage girls. I also like happy endings so now I let the ending imply that those girls maybe fell in love after all.

3. Please feel free to download the B-side of My best friend, Valentine’s Day, from hellosaferide.com. Valentine’s Day is about a girl who lives in a bad relationship. She decides to leave on Valentine’s Day in order to reclaim love for herself.

A work collague of mine came to congratulate me on great choice of words in the song’s final verse. “All that talk about the fish dicks, it’s so funny!” giggled my friend, all excited. I hated having to inform him that the word used is actually “fish STICKS”. Now I’m considering changing the words altogether. Please let me know what you think. Perhaps the word fish dick is too visual a word too sing.
